AAVS SHANGHAI TEN – SHOW | EVENT | FOLIO

AAVS SHANGHAI TEN

In 2016, to celebrate the 10th consecutive year of AAVS Shanghai, we hosted our most prominent event ever, hosting over 30 invited lecturers and panellists to a 2-day symposium. In addition, we curated an exhibition, titled, AAVS SH10 SHOW, featuring the work of students, tutors and the director of AAVS SH, and also the work of past visitors to the programme. AAVS Shanghai will launch a book in AAVS Shanghai 2017, titled AAVS SH10 FOLIO, published in February 2017.

Exhibition:  AAVS SH10 SHOW

This exhibition curated a retrospective of the design work of past students, current tutors and visitors to the AAVS Shanghai programme. The exhibition speculated on AAVS Shanghai’s association to other programmes in the AA Visiting School, particularly in Asia, and also the AA’s programmes and staff addressing design approaches to urbanism within the context of the unprecedented scale and extent of urbanization of China.

SHANGHAI TEN FOLIO is the culmination of AAVS SH10 SHOW | EVENT | FOLIO, a series of events which celebrate the tenth consecutive year of the AA Shanghai Summer School. SHANGHAI TEN has been curated, edited and hosted in 3 parts, including an exhibition (AAVS SH10 | SHOW), and a symposium event held in Shanghai in July 2016 (AAVS SH10 | EVENT), and this book, AAVS SH10 | FOLIO. SHANGHAI TEN is an opportunity not only to look back, collate, reflect critically, and to disseminate the work of the students, tutors, and visitors in the 10 years of the AAVS Shanghai Summer School, but also, these curatorial and editorial events present an important opportunity to look forward towards the future. More than simply a retrospective review of the past achievements in experimental teaching and learning of AAVS SH, this book narrates a projective account of the state of architecture and urbanism in the accelerated context of conceiving and making cities in China. SHANGHAI TEN FOLIO addresses theories, narratives, design approaches and instruments with which to engage with urbanism in the context of the unprecedented scale and extent of urbanization of China. The principle ambition of the AAVS SH10 events is to articulate the evolving intellectual agendas related to AAVS Shanghai’s commitment to the very serious ways in which today’s young generation plays with computational design systems applied to urban questions, issues and problems.  More specifically, our laboratory has always been focused on Shanghai – a vast, quickly changing, expanding and transforming urban organism, within the context of the Yangtze River Delta Metropolitan Region, of a population exceeding 90m. As designers conceiving, teaching and with this book, looking back to the body of work which has been accrued, this endeavour is foremost about the projective imagination of a generation of designers more committed to innovation which occurs haptically, often by accident, than with the propriety of how urbanism has been conventionally conceived and proposed.

SHANGHAI TEN FOLIO is the product of a multi-contributor collaboration, comprised as the composite aggregation of contributions from a large design community. Contributions have been selected from over 700 students coming to Shanghai from 42 countries; 38 tutors who have taught in the programme; and over 80 visitors to the programme, who have given lectures and presentations, attended AAVS symposia, and toured AAVS students to their built projects in and around Shanghai. Through its varied content and different formats, this book probes the diverse ways in which designers today interact with instruments and paradigms with which to harness and mobilise the complex forces shaping cities in the twenty-first century. The content of AAVS SHANGHAI TEN FOLIO also includes student work from AAVS Shanghai over ten years, from 2007-2016, the design work of past and present tutors and visitors, essay contributions from experts in urbanism, transcribed conversations from AAVS symposia, which collectively demonstrate the design approaches and paradigms AAVS Shanghai has targeted, with which to address the complex
