Tom Verebes first traveled to China in 1993, as an AA student, within a group of AA post-graduate design students touring Beijing, and Haikou, Hainan Island, where the AA Graduate Design Group worked on a project for a 64 km2 urban masterplan adjacent to Haikou. Verebes is the Provost of Turenscape Academy, which was launched in 2015 as the first independent design academy in China dedicated to post-professional design education and research of the built, lived and natural environment. He is also the Director of OCEAN CN, founded in Hong Kong and recently established within Turenscape, at the Peking University Science Park in Beijing. In 2016, he had held Visiting Professor roles at University of Pennsylvania, RMIT, Singapore University of Technology & Design, and University of Tokyo. Former roles include: Associate Dean (2011-2014), and Associate Professor at The University of Hong Kong (2009-2016); Co-Director of the Design Research Lab at the AA, where he had taught from 1996 to 2009; and, Guest Professor at Akademie der Buildenden Künste ABK Stuttgart (2004-2006). He founded and has directed AAVS Shanghai Summer School for 11 consecutive years, and is also the Programme Head of the newly launched AAVS Xixinan, in Huangshan, Anhui Province, China. Verebes has published over 150 books, chapters, articles and project features; has exhibited in over 50 venues worldwide, and has lectured extensively in Asia, Europe, North America, Africa and the Middle East.
